|Writing Prompt: Yawning Tiger.|
I love tigers...
Hello fair readers!
How are you? No, seriously, how are you doing? Please tell me in the comments. I feel like October was BOOK MONTH on this blog and I haven't had time to just talk. It's been a rush with some amazing books coming out, but I've loved every second.
And what's next? NaNoWriMo!!! In case you don't follow me on Twitter (which, WHY NOT?) you may not have heard about #WriteClub's crazy-awesome NaNo Marathon. We'll be running writing "sprints" for two full days, NONSTOP starting at midnight US-EST on November first. And we have a TON of awesome prizes to give away. So, if you're a writer and you want to win cool stuff AND participate in (probably) the biggest total word count ever recorded, come. JOIN US. Get on Twitter and follow @FriNightWrites and the hashtag #WriteClub. Go here and here for details about the marathon. That's THIS FRIDAY, in case you didn't know.
Also, check out THIS VIDEO for NaNoWriMo motivation from the WriteClub crew.
As for me, I'm still plugging away at the rewrite. It's going fairly well, I think. If my CP's are being honest, anyway. I won't give you spoilers... but maybe a look at chapter one? What version is this now... ten? Officially, it's Draft 6, but I'm sure I've rewritten chapter one more times than that. Anyway, tell me what you think of the first 250:
Lex opened his eyes, held still beneath his thick blankets, and let his vision adjust to the darkness. Outside, he could hear his guards murmuring. He forced himself to move slowly, avoiding the rustle of sheets, as he slid to the carpeted floor.
“…think he’ll try?”
“Are you mad? The king would be furious. No one crosses King Stephen, even his own son.”
Right, Lex thought, rolling his eyes.
He went to his wardrobe, placing each step carefully. He swung the doors open and began to slip things into a pack. His heaviest and plainest clothes, a map of Regania, his late grandmother’s engagement ring strung on a gold chain. He dressed just as slowly in hunting gear, thick boots, and his dagger.
As he latched the final clasp on his leather vest, he heard more voices join the ones outside his door.
“You’re relieved, we’ll take your place.”
“Sorry, there were some ah… young ladies we had to escort to their rooms.”
The guard scoffed. “Just don’t let him out all right?”
Footsteps retreated, and Lex waited.
Three knocks sounded on the door.
Lex went to open it. Outside stood two young knights in full armor. The one with light hair, Nick, spoke first.
“Are you sure about this?”
“Of course I am,” Lex said.
Orion, the dark-haired one, shook his head. “Your parents are going to know we helped you.”
“Yes,” Lex met his gaze. “Yes, they will.”
Silence fell between them. Lex took a deep breath and extended his hand to each of his friends.
So, as you can probably tell, it's changed a LOT in the past months, and especially with this most recent rewrite. I'm quite proud of it so far. I would love to submit it to PitchWars on Dec 2nd, so hopefully NaNoWriMo will go well for me and I can get it polished up by then. Crossing my fingers.
As far as reading, I read all the books I reviewed this month, obviously, as well as doing line edits on Rachel O'Laughlin's book, KIGHTS OF RILCH which will come out this spring ((*happy dance* you guys will LOVE it)). I also read ENDER'S GAME and ENDER'S SHADOW by Orson Scott Card, (I'm in the middle of SHADOW OF THE HEGEMON right now on audiobook, and loving it) I also got through Brandon Sanderson's ELANTRIS, and I'm halfway through the STEELHEART hardcover and David's crazy metaphors, laughing FAR more than I expected too. It's awesome.
What about you, dear reader? Readers, what have you read? Writers, what are you working on? Who's doing NaNoWriMo and who will be at the #WriteClub kickoff event??? Seriously, we have like THIRTY-something prizes, so it's going to be CRAZY.
As always, thanks for stopping by here, guys. It means a lot to me and my humble little blog.
**On a more personal note, we had a big scare last week with Ribbit. You might have seen me post about it on FB or Twitter. He had a pretty serious allergic reaction to either a cashew, some raw egg, or a combination of the two. We took him to the children's hospital nearby, and he got Benadryl and some steroids via IV. He went from being red and itchy all over to looking like he had a huge weird birthmark. He's much better now, and we were able to find out what he's for sure allergic to. Thank you all for your well-wishes and prayers during that time, we definitely felt them. <3
